Michigan is often thought of by the large cities that reside in such a beautiful state. Cities in vast sizes such as Lansing or Detroit, to name a couple. But head up north and even more unique towns and lifestyles can be found. The Upper Peninsula is a beautiful place with many geological and economic differences from the Lower Peninsula. However, one place in the U.P differs significantly from not only the southern part of the state, but the U.P as well. Eben Junction is a lovely small town, just over five thousand square miles. Do not be discouraged by Eben’s small size, the culture and lifestyle is far from simple. Through Eben’s deep rooted agricultural background, immersive geologic features and thriving community, Eben shines over the rest in a personal way.

Agriculture is a common in almost all states regardless of varying techniques or production rates. However, Eben’s agriculture demonstrates levels of meticulous work and dedication. Despite Eben’s ideal farming soil, the harsh winters often cut the crop seasons short and provide plenty of hardships for livestock producers. But that doesn’t shy many away. Farmers in Eben Junction have found many ways to tailor to the hard winters that limit what they can sow. Many grow corn due to its quick growing time and versatile use of being an export good as well as a great feed for cattle and hogs. Even the cattlemen in Eben have found ways to combat the unforgiving weather. Angus and crossbred cattle are a go to breed for the beef producers in this region. Many of the crossbred cattle have gone through generation after generation of careful breeding to ensure they can thrive and live fulfilling lives in Eben’s ever-changing climate. Not only are the farmers versatile, but the cattle too! But one vast aspect separates Eben’s agricultural heritage from the standard, the community-based nature of every harvest or butcher. Eben farmers often keep their products within their town. It’s not a rare sight to walk into the local grocery store and see hamburger or pork chops being sold by a neighbor’s farm or to be gifted a hand knitted sweater from the wool of a friend’s sheep. Eben’s emphasis on giving back to their community with their products is a reason why many are proud to call this little town their home.

Many know of the Upper Peninsula’s beautiful geologic features like their waterfalls or extensive copper mines, but Eben is home to one of the U.P’s best kept secrets. The Eben ice caves. In the summer, the ice caves seem like just a simple cliff, however, when the snow falls, along with the temperature, something truly magical happens. Melting snow that drips from the top of the cliff freezes on its decent, creating beautiful ice pillars of varying length. The freezing ice pattern is what gives the ice its “cave” formation. The unusual ice formation takes on an almost ethereal look from the inside of the cave. In the icy caverns the sun filters through at just the right angle to create a breathtaking glow which radiates across all the ice. The caves don’t grab the attention of just the locals. Ice climbers flock to the caves yearly to see if they can make it to the top of the magnificent wintery wonder. The ice caves hold a special place in the hearts of many Eben residents. The beautiful ice structure is the gem of many memories found in both young and old minds.

However, the ice caves and agricultural economy wouldn’t be able to flourish without the amazing community that ensures this tiny town keeps thriving. The locals in Eben are unlike any; a hardworking, dedicated bunch who prioritize a strong sense of belonging. The people here aren’t just neighbors, they’re an intricate community that cherishes a family feeling within their city limits. Their passion for helping and keeping resources local has grown the businesses found in their minimal miles. The New Moon is the prime spot for a fun night. With weekly trivia and amazing food, it’s no wonder why this bubbly place is always bustling. Across the road, the Snack Bar is a go to for a homestyle omelet or grilled cheese. Homemade bread and fresh coffee, who could say no to that? All these businesses are owned locally by people who love to serve their small town and the people in it. But the business owners aren’t the only ones who like to help. Everybody in Eben will never turn down anyone in need of assistance, no matter how big a task. Eben is a lovely place with so much to offer, but the truth is, Eben would be nothing without the strong sense of family found within their deep-rooted sense of community.

The small town of Eben is diverse in all ways, from their inventive farming techniques all the way to their dynamic and interesting citizens. Within these fun and unique qualities lie the key difference in how Eben shines above the larger cities in Michigan, the personal touch on just about everything! Whether one is looking for good food, magical sights or a rich, historical tale, Eben is home to it all. Flourishing economies in a town that has a family like bond is sought after nearly everywhere. But Eben has achieved the dream. While tiny, this town is truly mighty!​​​​​​​
