During my time in Peru, I saw firsthand the healthcare system and how modern medicine intersects with traditional medicine. As a pre-med student who also works in direct care, observing how patients are taken care of in another country was very informative. In rural areas, we learned from midwives and natural healers how mountainous herbs are used to treat ailments. I also gained insight into the clinics in the city center of Cusco through shadowing nurses and doctors.
This cross-cultural exchange in a clinical setting helped improve my ability to communicate in Spanish in a professional environment. Initially, I was nervous about the language barrier, but my interactions were overall positive and constructive. Technology assisted greatly with any unfamiliar words and people were willing to help me learn.
The highlight of my program was seeing one of the seven wonders of the world, Machu Picchu. No matter where I turned, the sights were breathtaking. When I closed my eyes, I could feel the light breezes passing through, hear the water rushing by,
I am truly grateful for the opportunity to have traveled to Peru and participated in a medical program. This meaningful experience was made possible through the support of this scholarship and had a lasting impact on my academic and personal growth.
