Group of students in front of hut with straw roof with local TanzaniansI was fortunate enough to receive the Forest Akers Endowed Scholarship for my study abroad this past summer. I spent six weeks in northern Tanzania immersing myself in their culture and fostering relationships with local community members. This experience was nothing short of life-changing. Whether it was my home stay, or working with the moms in Naitolia village, I learned so much more than I ever would have in a classroom. This program gave me clarity on what I want to do with my future. I found my passion of working with development projects in marginalized communities. I want to be that bridge between community members and the organization during times of development. I want to ensure that community members are being heard at all times, and actively taking part of the projects that are happening in their communities. Creating sustainable change only happens when these communities are involved! This scholarship is part of what made it possible for me to participate in this program. I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity I was given, and it is something that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
