International Studies and Programs (ISP) at Michigan State University has appointed Dr. Isabella Tirtowalujo as assistant dean for administration, effective March 1, 2024. Tirtowalujo will lead and support the implementation and administration of initiatives in support of MSU’s global engagement, including strategic planning and the development and approval process for international partnership MOUs. 

Tirtowalujo first joined ISP in 2019 and currently serves as associate director for Asia Hub and the Asian Studies Center, where she manages a wide variety of initiatives including external partnership programs, international visits and exchanges, and the implementation of U.S. Department of Education grant programs. 

“Dr. Tirtowalujo has critical strengths in areas like cross-cultural communication and collaboration, resource management, and supporting diversity, equity and inclusion,” said Steven Hanson, vice provost and dean for International Studies and Programs. “We are thrilled for her to continue her journey with ISP in this new leadership role.” 

Tirtowalujo’s career spans more than 11 years in higher education in the U.S. and Asia, including roles with UNICEF Indonesia, the Asian Development Bank, and Pelita Harapan University. Her diverse range of globally focused experience includes leading study abroad programs, alumni relations, education consulting, and collaborative initiatives with government and non-governmental entities in Southeast and East Asia. 

“Partnership building and expanding MSU’s focus toward creating global citizens has been a guiding compass for my work and professional development as a Global Spartan,” said Tirtowalujo. “I am eager to make immediate contributions to the important and catalytic work of International Studies and Programs.” 

Tirtowalujo earned her PhD in Curriculum, Instruction, & Teacher Education from MSU’s College of Education, a master's in education from Calvin College, and a bachelor's in math and computer science from Wesleyan University. She has presented widely and published on global education topics.
