Upon choosing my desired program, Arts, Culture, and Urban Sustainability in Rome, I was beyond excited to study in Italy. After completing the program, I can confidently say my expectations were exceeded. I have many takeaways from the Italian culture that I’ll always remember going forward.

One of the parts of this program that stood out to me was our ability to begin some of the program requirements before getting to Italy. By participating in pre-departure Zoom classes and starting a term paper, I had a greater opportunity to enjoy Italy while I was there. Upon my arrival to Rome, I was instantly greeted by the kind culture in Italy. I found many people to be very welcoming, from our hotel employees to the staff at the classroom. With our classroom located at the University of Washington Rome Center, I was very appreciative of the facilities they provided for us, including the beautiful classroom for our lectures and the gorgeous terrace. Additionally, the food in Rome was incredible and we had the opportunity to try many cafes and restaurants. Pizza rossa and cacio e pepe were two of my favorite dishes in Rome.

While in the classroom, we learned greatly about the aspects of urban sustainability, and I’ve been able to apply my knowledge. While being in Rome and during the exploration of other Italian cities, I have a better understanding of how cities form and how they function. It will be exciting to see these familiar faces back on campus and we can reflect on our experiences together.

Overall, I’m very grateful for the opportunity to participate in an education abroad program. It was an incredible experience that I’d recommend to anyone interested in studying abroad. From the knowledge I gained to the culture I experienced, the easygoing, kind, and attentive Italian lifestyle is an aspect I’ll carry with me beyond the program. This is an experience I hold close to my heart and will look back on for the rest of my life.
